Co-founded by Shana Gujral and Noé Solange, Family of East is an exciting new platform designed to spotlight musicians, DJs, producers, and presenters from 48 Asian heritage countries. The platform offers a curated directory aimed at connecting these artists with opportunities such as festivals, venues, and other industry events.
Gujral, a DJ, producer, and presenter, and Solange, a musician, producer, and songwriter, were both inspired to launch the initiative after facing similar challenges in their own music careers. They noticed a distinct lack of Asian representation on line-ups and struggled to find the same opportunities as their non-Asian counterparts.
“We initially connected over our Asian heritage and realized we were experiencing the same difficulties as music artists,” the founders explained in a press release. “We knew that building a platform to bridge this representation gap was essential.”
The Family of East platform seeks to address these challenges by providing a comprehensive, easily accessible directory where artists can be discovered. Rather than waiting for promoters to find them, the platform allows these creatives to showcase their talent and be seen by industry professionals.
“Our mission is to create a world where Asian identities are not just included, but central to the creative narrative,” they continued. “We hope to inspire future generations and break down the barriers that have long existed in the music industry.”
Artists can submit their details through a simple form, which will be used to create profiles featuring their portfolios, social media links, and work. These profiles will be made available to professionals in the industry, helping to generate new opportunities.
To celebrate the launch, Family of East will host a party and open decks event on Wednesday, 9th October, at Matter of Time Studios in London.
This launch follows the success of similar initiatives, such as the Black Artist Database (formerly Black Bandcamp), which has since evolved into a label.
